Three distinct territories converge in Wayfarer, drawing the eye toward a junction that appears to offer only two directions. Yet above the right ridge, a slender white line reveals another way forward—less obvious and considerably narrower. Through weathered texture, earthen colour, and an opening suffused with light, Wayfarer reminds us that there is often a path beyond what we are presented, albeit narrow.

Journey is both the path and the act of taking it. A pale passage rises through weathered terrain—broad as it approaches the viewer, then narrowing toward a destination it never reveals. Horizontal drips remain as strata and scars, giving the passage a history rather than a literal direction. Traces of Green Grey, once dominant in an earlier iteration, remain quietly embedded like a blueprint beneath the painting’s metamorphosis.

Defiance

Defiance refused every attempt to turn it into something it was not. It emerged through several overhauls, each one stripping away another imposed direction, until the painting finally arrived at the form it had been insisting upon. Born from an earlier work, Obstinance, which no longer exists, Defiance carries that history in its weathered division, muted green-grey field, and rugged earthen ground—a work shaped as much by refusal as resolve.

The Heart
Behind the Work

Lois Sprague, artist and founder of VisiSPEAK

I've always been an artist of one kind or another. For most of my life, music was the language through which I expressed myself. I cut my teeth on Bluegrass music with my father, then went on to perform professionally as a bassist rooted in Cajun, Zydeco, Blues, and R&B—learning how rhythm, atmosphere, tension, and release can say what ordinary words cannot.

That musical life still moves through my paintings. I think in passages, pauses, harmonies, and voices in conversation. Music and culture from around the world continue to shape my sense of rhythm, mood, and movement—most notably the traditions of Greece and Ireland, the Soca music of Tobago, and Japanese jazz fusion. The mystery and endurance of ancient Mesopotamian and Greek architecture also enter the work through weathered surfaces, thresholds, ruins, and the suggestion of worlds that have existed beyond memory.

Painting didn't replace music; it expanded it. I had viewed the world through an artist's eyes for years, but it wasn't until I became brave enough to put that way of seeing onto canvas that my artistry found another voice.

My faith in Jesus Christ is central to my life. It shapes how I see the world, what I hope for, and what I imagine may exist beyond what we know.

I do not pretend to know what Heaven will be like. But I often paint with another world in mind—a place aged and beautiful, mysterious and welcoming, where there is peace without emptiness and discovery without fear.

I live with my paintings, and over time they become more than objects on a wall. They become quiet companions: dependable presences in the rooms where life actually happens. My hope is that they might become that for someone else, too.

Its weathered seam holds both strength and peace—a small work made in gratitude for someone who believed in the journey near its beginning.

Solace holds tension without surrendering its calm—a gentle reminder that peace is not the absence of difficulty, but the presence that remains beside us through it. Gateway was never intended to begin a body of work. It was created as a message for my niece, painted on aluminium foil glued to canvas—an approach unlike anything else in my body of work. Working on that unconventional surface, I found myself experimenting more freely than ever before, and it became a gateway for me. Every collection that followed can trace part of its origin to that first act of exploration.

Portal is the direct result of Gateway and an expression of my actual belief in portals. It represents the unseen thresholds that surround us—opportunities, choices, and possible worlds just beyond our sight. A companion to Gateway, this piece is both a continuation and an expansion—a deeper step into the spaces I believe exist, waiting. Some doors are opened with intention. Others call to us with nothing more than a feeling. This is one of those.
